Advice Column: How to Spend a Free Period

Ella Hakimian

If you’re anything like me, when you find out you have a free period. you immediately begin to imagine all the things you can get done. Suddenly, you feel ready to be productive and study for a test or finish your homework. However, most times, something comes up and you never really end up doing what you had planned. One way to prevent this from happening is to go to the library or student lounge instead of the lunchroom. The lunchroom is usually very chaotic and loud, preventing you from completing your tasks. The library, on the other hand, is a quiet space full of productive students, motivating you to get your work done. Sometimes, you may even be able to find a free, open classroom that you can work in; this is probably the most peaceful place, allowing you to focus and not be distracted by other students. If you have a free period before a test, you should use it to quickly review your notes and make sure you know the material well. It’s also a great time to meet with a teacher that is oftentimes busy or hard to find during your lunch period. Lastly, if you choose to simply relax and chill with friends during your free period, you can go to the lunchroom and grab something to eat. When my friends and I get bored, we love to taste test some of the new interesting snacks from the vending machine. It’s a lot of fun- when the snacks taste good, of course. Next time you have a free period, consider these options.
