Advice Corner: Dealing With Midterm Stress and Study Advice

Natalie Terrani

As you are probably aware, midterm exams are just around the corner. This time of the school year is one of the most stressful and difficult, and it can be really tough dealing with all of it at once. You may not know where to start or what to study, and that is perfectly normal. In this situation, organization is the key to success. The best course of action is to create a study schedule for yourself, planning out how long you will spend studying for each subject and when you will study it. It is crucial that you give yourself breaks and free time to ensure that you don’t get burnt out. Eat a snack or watch some T.V. Make sure you don’t take too much advantage of this break, though. You may also want to consider taking a few hours to make review sheets for all of your classes so you are not overwhelmed with hundreds of pages of notes; this, though, does not help everyone. You must discover the method that is best for you. If you find that you are having trouble understanding the material, our wonderful Director of Student Life offers the best solution: peer tutoring. Thankfully, North Shore is filled with plenty of intelligent students that are always willing to help. In order to tutor for a specific subject, students must be approved by Ms. Gold. They must maintain a minimum of a 90 average and ask permission from their teacher. Teachers may also recommend students they think are fit for the job. Students can meet with their peer tutor during lunch or after school, depending on their availability. This is a rewarding experience for both the student and the tutor. The students learn and the tutor has the opportunity to review. It’s a win win. Lastly, if you feel a lack of motivation to execute this plan, this can be quickly turned around if you constantly remind yourself of what it’ll feel like afterward when you ace all your exams. Your hard work and effort will pay off. You got this. Good luck!
