If you ask North Shore students who their current favorite author is, 9 out of 10 will say the name Colleen Hoover*. Also referred to as the “Professional Make Believer,” Colleen Hoover is a #1 New York Times bestselling author and the genius behind eleven novels and five novellas**.
After hearing the numerous raves about Hoover, I gave in to the North Shore obsession and went to the library to check out one of her books. I originally intended to read Hoover’s It Ends With Us, which is 9 out of 10 North Shore students' favorite book***, but it was already checked out and had a waiting list with 20 people on it. So, I let the librarian choose for me, and I walked out of the Great Neck Library holding a book titled Heart Bones.
Heart Bones is one of those books that you just can’t put down. It tells the story of a teenager named Beyah who is only two months away from her long-awaited escape from her depressing and painful life with her addictive mother. However, life catches Beyah by surprise, and she is forced to move in with her father who she barely knows. Heart Bones captures Beyah’s transition from a negative and miserable person to one who finds beauty in the world. Along her journey, Beyah meets a boy named Samson who, on the surface, seems to have nothing in common with her, an impoverished girl. However, as the book continues, it becomes apparent that Samson and Beyah have way more in common than it seems.
This love story definitely gives validity to the Colleen Hoover obsession that 9 out of 10 North Shore students seem to have****.
