Book Review- The Divergent Series

Of all of the book series I’ve read, the “Divergent” series by Veronica Roth is my favorite one yet! This series is situated in a dystopian society where each individual is born into a faction. A faction is a group of people that have a specific task for a niche that efficiently serves society. There are five diverse factions; Abnegation, Candor, Amity, Erudite, and Dauntless, each facilitating the functioning of society. At the age of 16, one is required to determine which faction they’ll belong to for the rest of their life. The faction system makes no exceptions, meaning, once one’s decision is made, there’s no going back. If one wanted to leave their faction, they would be placed in the Factionless, the people that have nowhere to reside and are not maintained or sustained by anyone. In the big picture, behind the curtains of seeming perfection, there is one, psychopathic mastermind behind the entire faction system.

What really grasped my attention in the Divergent Series was not the romance and action, though they did contribute additional amusement, but it was the lesson I extrapolated from it: there are societies in which select people orchestrate the government to their benefit, at the expense of all of the citizens. This theme of abusive power is not only found in this book series, but rather is creeping into American society. Overall, I highly recommend reading the Divergent Series because in the long run, it will allow you to acknowledge the parallels between the downward spirals in the book and where America may lamentably be heading.
