Club of the Week: “Girls Who Code”

As technology becomes more and more influential in our lives, it is crucial that we know how to utilize it to some degree. “Girls Who Code” is one of the many technology-themed clubs that North Shore offers to students. Run by Mrs. Wilensky and student president and vice president Abigail Mottahedeh and Chloe Ganjian, “Girls Who Code” is open to all female students interested in Computer Science.

Each year, Mrs. Wilensky sets a new central theme for the club. This year, she is focusing on teaching the 9th and 10th graders all about the basics of coding, while familiarizing them with the different programming languages. The 11th and 12th graders, who have already learned about the basics of coding, will spend the year learning about pioneers and distinguished figures in the field of computer science. Each student will research an individual of their choice and learn about their contributions to computer science. At the end of the school year, the 11th and 12th graders will present what they have learned to the 9th and 10th graders.

Mrs. Wilensky is planning incredible events for her students this year. For example, she is planning to have a panelist of North Shore alumni who work in computer science speak to the students about their experiences and give students inspiration and advice.

In addition to the in-school activities that students can partake in, Mrs. Wilensky connects students to the worldwide “Girls Who Code” organization. This is a great way for students to connect with other computer science students around the world and attend terrific events that the organization holds.

“Girls Who Code” meets once every two weeks during lunch. It is an incredibly rewarding opportunity to take part in, and I encourage everyone to join!
