Environmental Education

Updated: Oct 12, 2021

Creating awareness about environmental issues is becoming more important as we move forward into the future. Encouraging people to develop the right attitude towards conservation is the best way to ensure sustainability without compromising the needs of our generation.

Environmental education can be implemented in unique and exciting ways getting people interested and thinking about conservation. A recent museum opening in Indonesia is a perfect example of how creativity, culture and art can inspire people to care and make a change.

The museum is subtly sending a message about the world's worsening ocean plastics crisis. The exhibits are made entirely from plastics, to convince people to rethink their habits and say no to single-use bags and bottles. The exhibit is made up of more than 10,000 plastic waste items, all collected from polluted rivers and beaches. The centerpiece is a statue made from single-use household items, highlighting to people to stop the use of single-use plastic.

Since single use plastics are very difficult to recycle, we as a school and a community should do our best to try to stop using them as they pollute our ocean, which is also an important source of our food.

Environmental education connects us to the world and teaches us about both natural and built environments. It raises awareness of issues impacting the environment, as well as actions we can take to improve and sustain it.

There is much benefit for us as students to be environmentally educated. It builds critical and creative thinking, encourages a healthy lifestyle and promotes us to take responsible action. It also teaches tolerance and understanding of other people's thoughts and ideas. Environmental education helps students understand how their decisions and actions affect the environment and builds knowledge and skills necessary to address complex environmental issues. Students are empowered to share their voice and make a difference at school and in their own communities.
