Memphis Grizzlies Make NBA History

Ethan Kohananoo

Recently, the NBA all-star and player for the Memphis Grizzlies, Ja Morant, was listed on the injury report for a left knee sprain. He was expected to be out of the game for a week or two. While this was very devastating for the Grizzlies, they were still winning a lot of their matchups with his absence. One of their matchups during this period even went down in NBA history. When the official injury report was released prior to Thursday night's game between the Oklahoma City Thunder and Memphis Grizzlies, most predicted a blowout game was likely in store. Most didn't expect it to escalate to an NBA record breaking game. To everyone’s surprise, the Grizzlies came away with a 152-79 victory over the Thunder, establishing a new NBA record for the largest margin of victory: 73 points. The previous record was held with a 68 point lead, reached in a 148-80 Cleveland Cavaliers win over the Miami Heat during the 1991-1992 season. The 152 points for the grizzlies also set a Grizzlies franchise record for a single game. This new NBA record was achieved without Ja Morant which is hard to believe. After the game, Grizzlies guard De'Anthony Melton said: "It feels great to be in the history books, especially in front of our home crowd; we did it one through fifteen. Everybody contributed, everybody played hard, and we all got to get in the game. So, it's always a blessing." Melton is pointing out that even without Ja Morant, they still played like a team and gave it their all. Every quarter of the game they scored more and more points, increasing their lead and motivating them to keep going. We have to realize that we are just roughly a quarter through the NBA regular season. It’ll be very interesting to see how the Grizzlies continue to play this season alongside their star player Ja Morant.
