Movie Review: Rocketman

Lior Edrich

Rocketman tells the story of a misunderstood child who never overcomes his emotionally chilly upbringing. Reginald Dwight discovers his talent of playing the piano, but his father, harsh and remote, and his mother, absorbed in life’s daily struggles, is indifferent to his exceptional talents. He then changes his name to Elton John and collaborates with songwriter Bernie Taupin to become one of the most iconic figures in pop history. Elton goes through the ups and downs of being world famous, while trying to figure out his personal life. Set to his most beloved songs, it's the epic musical story of Elton John, his breakthrough years in the 1970s and his fantastical transformation from shy piano prodigy to international superstar.

I have always been a fan of Elton John’s music, so I obviously had to watch Rocketman. It’s safe to say Rocketman became one of my favorite movies. It had everything I could hope for. Stellar singing, fantastic costumes, and talented actors. Taron Egerton, who played Elton John, really showcased all his talents in acting and especially in singing. Unlike Bohemian Rhapsody, the movie used Taron Egerton’s actual voice instead of just putting in Elton John’s. In my opinion, this made Rocketman very unique and would have lost the charm that it possesses if it didn’t include Egerton’s singing. Even though Rocketman has only been out since 2019, it has continued to impact me in such a powerful way. It taught me many lessons and continues to inspire me.
