Updated: Mar 6, 2024

The North Shore Hebrew Academy High School Science Society went on a reecnt trip to the Hayden Planetarium in New York City. The trip was chaperoned by Mr. Wykes and Mrs. Vesa. The program showcased new computer technologies and explained how they can be used to map our galaxy. The astronomers showed participants that the earth actually lies in a ‘Local Bubble’ of very little matter. They explained how the local bubble was formed by a series of supernovas that pushed away most of the matter that was in the area. Students learned that our sun actually made it into this bubble because it entered during one of the cosmic expansions and the heliosphere dispelled the energy release that allowed the solar system to pass through. Overall, it was a very cool display of both modern technology and new discoveries of the mysteries of the universe. The group arrived back at NSHAHS at around 9:15 pm and while it was a long day, it was an extremely interesting event with a lot of intellectually stimulating content.  It was also a pleasant surprise to have a majority of ninth graders on an S2 out-trip.
