On Sunday, March 17th, North Shore came in Second at the Lander Science Olympiad, an award we haven’t achieved in over a decade and only twice before in our history. North Shore science students bested 10 other schools in academic and engineering events, edging Frisch and losing only to SAR. Each event has its own dramatic story to tell. Initially it wasn’t going well for North Shore. Our vaunted Chem Lab squad, a team cornerstone, suffered a technical disqualification and our rookie WIDI group posted a dismal tenth place. But then the medals began rolling in, beginning with our powerhouse Codebusting trio and our elite Ecology and Microbe Mission pairs winning gold. Geologic Mapping took a third and our returning Forestry and Earth Science pairs finished with fourth. But it was Mr. Santiago’s group of junior engineers that came through in the clutch with a breathtaking win in Scrambler and a fourth place in the Tower event. Kudos to new Olympians and those returning from last year’s team who helped make this year a great one. Thank you to those who came out and tried out. And thanks as well to Dr. Okoko, Mr. Anderson and of course, Mr. Santiago for all your assistance. Next year, watch out, SAR, we’re coming for you!
