Substance Use and Abuse Program

Sofia LoPresti

Over the past century, the increase in alcohol consumption has, in addition to helping further alcohol industries, contributed to the spread of alcoholism. Throughout recent history, there have been attempts to ban alcohol, such as the 1920s prohibition period, due to the effects it had. However, such efforts were ultimately unsuccessful.

Overconsumption of alcohol can cause serious medical problems, such as liver failure, high blood pressure, and strokes. If there is prolonged abuse of the beverage, cancer of the esophagus, voice box, liver, and colon may develop. In addition to the health risks alcohol imposes, it may also negatively impact relationships with family and friends.

On Monday, February 13th, North Shore students had the opportunity to hear from a speaker about precisely that- how alcohol can affect families. He went through the statistics of alcoholism, including average rates of alcohol consumption, as well as the different ways it can affect people. Following that, the students were told three stories, each about a different individual and their personal experiences with alcoholism. Each narrative was inspiring in its own way, and not only did they educate students, but they also depicted the immense strength and courage required by those fighting their addiction problems.

The speaker taught the students in a way that kept them captivated, while at the same time delivering a powerful message. Sophomore Avital Abramov said, “Monday’s program was a life-changing and empowering experience for me, but everyone else was involved, too. I was very moved by the stories, and I feel more educated and aware of alcohol abuse and the impact it leaves on people in every aspect of their lives”.
