Current Events: Cheney Has Been Ousted!

On Wednesday, May 11, 2021, Representative of Wyoming Liz Cheney was ousted from her republican leadership role; she was the 3rd highest ranking GOP member in the House of Representatives. She was ousted mainly because she voted to impeach Donald Trump while he was in office. Another reason for her ousting, provided by House minority leader Kevin Mcarthuy, is because her ideas did not align with those of her colleagues. This is the 2nd time a vote of no confidence was brought upon Liz Cheney’s rank; the first one failed due to support from House leadership. It is important to note the following difference: the first vote was done by secret ballot and the second vote was done by voice. After the completion of the second vote, Cheney went on to declare that she will make sure Trump would never enter the oval office as President again. She has since been replaced by Elise Stefanik, a Republican representative from NY who was endorsed by Republican house leadership and Trump. Trump, however, may have shot himself in the leg with his decision (fivethiertyeight.com). Reason being, Cheney voted for 90 percent of Trump’s policies, while Stefanik only voted for 75 percent; most notably, she voted against Trump’s tax cuts. If the Trump wing of the GOP wanted a Trump-like Republican, they almost certainly failed at that.
