Interview with the One and Only: Dr. Chen

Abigail Mottahedeh

Abigail: What classes do you teach?

Dr. Chen: Anatomy and Physics

Abigail: Why did you choose to teach Physics and Anatomy?

Dr. Chen: Physics and Anatomy were my favorite subjects in high school. I was ranked second place in my school in physics.

Abigail: What do you love most about working at North Shore?

Dr. Chen: The students are smart, enthusiastic, and love to learn; we are all one big team.

Abigail: How did you find this job?

Dr. Chen: That’s not important; what's important is that I’m here!

Abigail: Where are you from?

Dr. Chen: China. I moved to America in 2007.

Abigail: How many siblings do you have?

Dr. Chen: I am an only child.

Abigail: How did you learn English?

Dr. Chen: I taught myself English when I came to America. I used to talk to my GPS and now I learn from my students. I love learning from them!

Abigail: Where else have you worked?

Dr. Chen: I worked in Yeshiva High School for Girls in Queens (also known as Central) and Yeshiva University High School for Boys in Manhattan.

Abigail: Which one of your classes do you like the most?

Dr. Chen: My 9th period physics class. Just kidding, I love all my classes equally. My students are the best- especially Shira Cohen!

Abigail: What is your teaching method?

Dr. Chen: Each student has a different method of learning and I am here to help each student find the best method for themselves. I teach everything step by step, ensuring that every student understands the material.

Abigail: What do you like to do for fun?

Dr. Chen: I like to jog and play basketball and badingmont

Abigail: What are some fun facts about you?

Dr. Chen: I love Coca-Cola and candy and was a track star in high school. Also, I am still in contact with my high school and middle school teachers in China. I used to stay after class everyday for hours and just talk to them, allowing me to build a close relationship with them.

Abigail: What advice do you have for students?

Dr. Chen: Believe in yourselves; don’t be afraid to chase your dreams. I went to medical school not knowing any English and using a dictionary and I got my M.D. If I could do it, so can you!

Abigail: Is there anything else you would like to say?

Dr. Chen: I tutor college students for the MCAT. Hopefully one day I can tutor one of you!
