NSHAHS BLOOD DRIVE

Yuval Haliva

Tuesday, November 7th, 2023 marks the NSHAHS Annual Blood Drive. But why is donating your blood such an important thing to do? Well, here are some reasons. For starters, donating blood is a great way to show your support for patients and their families, and is a very important part of tzedakah. Helping other people is very much engrained in what it means to act as a Jew in this world, and donating your blood falls right into that category. Not only is this a huge mitzvah, but it is such an easy one to do as well. Donating your blood takes as little as 30 minutes of your time, while making a lifelong difference for someone else. People suffer from all kinds of health conditions, and donating your blood can help save the life of someone in need.

Once your blood is donated, it is shipped to a hospital where it is then given to a patient in need of a blood transfusion. What’s amazing is that this blood transfusion doesn’t always have to be given to just one person. Did you know that a single blood donation can save up to three lives?

Our blood is made up of three components: blood cells, platelets and plasma. Each of these components can help a specific patient with a specific health condition, as each element can target a specific category of disease. For instance, platelets are essential for treating cancer patients, and plasma is used to treat diseases of the liver and autoimmune conditions. All that being said, If you’re able to donate blood, it’s a great way to make a difference in people’s lives, and it’s definitely a volunteer activity to check off your list of mitzvot. So donate your blood on November 7th at the Annual Blood Drive hosted by NSHAHS!
