On Tuesday, April 16th, four teams from the Research Program went with Ms. Whittle to compete and represent North Shore at the Long Island Science Congress. The Research Program has been a part of the school since its inception and yet it is unique in that it is one of the only high school science research avenues for independent, student-driven project work. Our researchers must design their own study from first principles, carry out their experiment, meticulously collect their data and prepare an engaging public presentation. This year, three of our presentations involved testing animal responses using organisms that have not fully been embraced as ‘models’ in biology. One group was curious about the effects of stimulants on water fleas. Another looked at how sugar affects the metabolism of darkling beetle larva. And a third studied the inhibitory hormones that affect metamorphosis of butterflies. In psychology we are presenting research on the recall of facial expressions and in physical science investigations into variables that affect the amperage, hence life, of batteries is in its final stage. Several other projects are in the pipeline attesting to the curiosity and discipline for which our students are known. On May 5th our presenters will take their projects to the SAAWA Science Fair for our last public showing and competition.
