Science Society: “An Affair of the Heart” and “Phun with Physics”

On May 30, North Shore’s Science Society Club met for an Anatomy Night lesson: “An Affair of the Heart”. On Anatomy night, Dr. Chandhok reviewed heart cycles, regular and irregular rhythms, and cardiovascular disorders. It was an extremely informative and interactive session, where she asked us questions, while we got the opportunity to ask some of our own questions. In the end, we each got our own real sheep's hearts to dissect and were able to reinforce everything we learned about the heart system. Better yet, we got the chance to interact with and see a heart in real life! Each of the science society members participating would agree that it was truly an educational and remarkably unforgettable experience. As Sofia LoPresti, a sophomore and member of the Science Society club, said: “I have always had an interest in Anatomy, and Anatomy night with Dr. Chandhok really gave me a chance to experience a brief exposure to anatomy, and I was very happy to have had the hands-on experience of dissecting the sheep heart.”

The Science Society Club held its last event on June 7 for Physics night: Phun with Physics. This was the last Science Society event of the year, and it was the perfect way to wrap up this year’s round of the Science Society Club. Dr. Okoko and Mr. Choudhury presented a workshop including “The Way You Wire Matters” (explorations on electric circuits) and “Magnificent” (about using electricity to induce a magnet). It was an extremely intriguing and engaging event for all participants that night, and they are all looking forward to next year’s round of Science Society trips and workshops!

Science Society is a wonderful club for anyone interested in science because, in each of the nine meetings, the club goes into specific fields of science to expose you to all aspects of it. In addition, the Science Society club requires the attendance of three meetings to make your membership to the club.
