ISRAEL UNDER ATTACK

Yuval Haliva

Israel, a land promised to us by Hashem. A land whose purpose is to unite the Jewish people. The Jewish people’s only home meant to be at everlasting peace. Yet, a tragedy has struck in recent days. But how did this all begin? After the Holocaust ended, the Jews were given a declaration by the British, famously known as the “Balfour Declaration”. The Balfour Declaration stated that the Jewish people would rightfully have their own home country, after all the torture they had endured. The Jews arrived in what is now known as Israel, and amongst those who resided there were some Arab people. For several years, there was peace between the Jews and Arabs, but this peace did not last long. Tensions grew between the two groups regarding who was entitled to this land. The Arab people developed a hatred for the Jews and wanted Israel all for themselves.

This conflict resulted in many brutal wars in which innocent lives were taken and families were destroyed. This conflict stays apparent even today; however, none of these wars compare to the attack that took place on Saturday, October 7th, 2023. Innocent Israeli civilians were enjoying their time at the Re’im Music Festival, unaware that for some these would be their final moments. By a surprise attack, Hamas terrorists came to the festival and opened fire, taking 300 lives and injuring thousands. Horrified screams filled the festival and the only way to see survival was to run into the fields and try to find shelter. Many people who could not make it in time were kidnapped by these terrorists and taken as hostages. Until today, these hostages are missing, and as the actions of these terrorists have shown us in the past, are enduring unspeakable torture. Hamas continues to kidnap and kill more innocent civilians daily.

As if this massacre was not evil enough, the inhumane members of Hamas continue to send missiles throughout Israel each day. These missiles land on homes, schools, streets, and even a hospital. Additionally, the security fence separating Israel and Gaza has been torn down, creating easy access for more terrorists to enter. Terrorists continue to ambush the streets, breaking into people’s homes, and murdering them. Every night, Israeli civilians hear sirens alerting them to seek shelter as rockets and bombs fill the sky. Israelis are terrified to step outside of their homes, and therefore are lacking food and supplies. The death rate has skyrocketed, currently standing at 1300, with several thousands injured. Hundreds of people are still kidnapped including infants, children, and elders. Our country is currently living in fear each day, hoping and praying that this terror will come to an end.
