North Shore Shines in Model Congress

Tyler Ganjian

Model Congress is a program which allows students the opportunity to be involved in a simulation of the United States Congress. On October 18th, NSHAHS’s Model Congress team participated in its very first competition of the year. This specific competition was part of the Citron Online Congress Tournament. Our Model Congress team, led by President Ilana Greenberg and Vice President Mayah Rosenzweig, under the guidance of Dr. Allen and Mrs. Bodner, submitted “A Bill to Prepare the Next Generation of Voters” for congressional debate. This bill proposed the idea of including a one-semester civics course as part of the high school curriculum, in order to educate future generations of voters on how to make their own political decisions. Our model senators each debated on various bills submitted by different high schools, including our own.

Our North Shore senators were exceptional in this competition, with Abby Rutta finishing in 7th place, VP Mayah Rosenzweig in 6th, Elizabeth Mirharoon in 4th, Sarah-Kate Leibowitz in 3rd, and once again, President Ilana Greenberg bringing home 1st place for North Shore. Dr. Allen said, “I am so happy for our Model Congress team. We have a busy and exciting year ahead – this is just the beginning!” This was just the first of the many competitions our team partakes in. Others include the upcoming Citron competition on November 11th, the Princeton Model Congress which takes place between November 16-19 in Washington, D.C. and the University of Pennsylvania Model Congress competition in the Spring. The results of this past competition point to a successful future for our Model Congress team in their upcoming tournaments. We wish them the best of luck!
